VIA Rail Canada

VIA Rail Canada is the country’s national passenger rail operator, connecting over 400 communities across more than 12,500 km of track — a backbone of sustainable, intercity travel.

VIA Rail Canada is the public corporation responsible for passenger rail services in Canada. Founded in 1977 by the Canadian Government, it operates interurban, long-distance, and regional routes, serving both the major cities in the Québec–Windsor corridor and remote communities. With its train network, VIA Rail combines sustainability, accessibility, and comfort, offering options ranging from economy travel to luxury cabins for unforgettable experiences. Additionally, it is immersed in an ambitious strategic plan (“VIAction 2030”) to modernize its fleet, improve service frequency, and get closer to the traveler with innovative solutions.

Notes

  • Book in advance: according to users, booking in advance is key to getting better prices.
  • Bring reusable cup: there is free hot water in some cars (“Skyline car”) for tea, soup or instant coffee.
  • Expect delays: since VIA shares tracks with freight trains, there may be frequent delays.
  • For overnight trips, bring earplugs: the train can make noise from the tracks, especially at night.
  • Upgrade if possible: the “Prestige” cabins offer a much more comfortable experience, but they are expensive.
  • Evaluate cost vs car: for some interurban routes, renting a car might be cheaper.
  • Use the reservation system: VIA has introduced a new more intuitive reservation system.
  • Stay eco‑conscious: traveling by train is a more sustainable way to move around Canada; VIA promotes it as part of its mission.
